I recently taught a three session specialty class themed “Caring Kids.” Through books, songs and activities, the children in the class (ages 2.5-5) engaged in social emotional learning with topics such as recognizing emotions, solving problems and being a kind, empathetic friend.
I knew I wanted to use my own book, Grow a Heart, to teach some of these concepts, but also wanted to find two more social emotional books to plan activities around. After doing some research, I ended up picking The Color Monster and Kindness Makes Us Strong. I was happy with my choices and felt all three of these books were simple enough for the little ones, but engaging enough for the older kids!
Here are the links to the books as well as links to the activities I created to go along with them.
We used ripped paper to create growing hearts.
I used the printable template that can be found in my Grow a Heart Classroom Kit.
We used paint dobbers to paint our monsters.
I used the printables I created for this project.
We used watered down washable paint to add color to our kindness quotes.
I used the printable coloring/painting pages I created.
These books and activities are a great way to introduce and teach social emotional learning concepts to young learners! Enjoy!
